Our Horses
Horses are social herd* animals, they are socially dependent on each other. Why? Because for prey animals, there is safety in numbers – and horses are prey animals. Hanging out in groups is how they survive in the wild. Their first response to a threat is to flee, although they are known to stand their ground and defend themselves or their offspring in cases where flight is untenable, such as when a foal would be threatened. There is always a dominant or "lead" to a herd. The dominant has many responsibilities that keep the herd fed and safe. Each member of the herd has a role in the herd dynamics.

Domesticated Horses however are very dependent on humans for food, shelter, safety and care. So for domesticated horses, humans become the "lead" in their domesticated dynamic. The horses rescued by Panhandle Equine Rescue have no real "herd". Their instinct of "fight or flight" have either kicked in or have been surpassed. Our horses are to become part of a new family (herd). After rehabilitation each rescued equine is placed in a loving home environment. Foster Homes are found until the horse can choose it's new Adoptive Family. Each horse that we have rescued has left a wonderful impression on all of us. We will love each of them always. So forever they will remain part of the PER family. They will always remain a part of "Our Herd".

On occasion we are unable to reach a horse in time. At that point we are only able to provide comfort, and gentle hands as they cross over the "Rainbow Bridge".

*Herd refers to a social grouping of certain animals of the same species, either wild or domestic, and also to the form of collective animal behavior.

Our Mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and provide adoption services for abused, neglected and abandoned equines.
